Mainsail

The mainsail is the primary sail set behind the mainmast on modern bermudan-rigged sailboats. While historically the largest sail aboard, modern high-aspect sloops often feature a mainsail smaller than their headsails. In nautical terminology, the term mainsail refers strictly to the main propulsion sail on the main mast and should not be confused with secondary foresails or storm sails like the trysail. According to Wikipedia, a mainsail is the sail rigged aft of the main mast on a fore-and-aft rigged vessel, with its foot normally attached to a boom.

Rigging and controlling the mainsail relies on key elements of running rigging. The luff attaches along the mast track or furling slot, the foot secures to the boom, and the clew connects to the outhaul. Halyards raise the sail, while control lines like the mainsheet and boom vang govern its angle and tension. Efficient sail control requires proficient yacht rope handling, where winches provide necessary mechanical advantage to manage high loads on the mainsheet and halyard.

During tactical sailing, trimming the mainsail dictates boat balance and steering characteristics. Precise mainsail adjustment is crucial when carrying out fundamental maneuvers such as tacking and gybing, where controlled boom sweeps prevent accidental gybes. In extreme weather exceeding 30 knots of wind, reefing reduces mainsail surface area in pre-measured stages to maintain stability before swapping to a heavy-weather trysail.
