Sail Reefing

The practice of reducing a sail's active surface area to maintain vessel stability, reduce heel, and preserve control in strong winds.

Sail reefing is a fundamental sail-handling technique designed to reduce the active surface area of a sail as wind speed increases. The primary objective of reefing is to minimize heel angle, prevent helm overpower, and reduce mechanical stress on the rig and hull. In nautical terminology, the noun "reef" refers to the portion of the sail rolled or folded away, distinguishing it from geological underwater reefs.

Skippers typically initiate reefing when apparent wind speeds reach 15 to 20 knots (Beaufort Force 4 to 5). On a modern sloop, the mainsail is reefed using slab reefing systems—where the halyard is eased and the sail is secured to the boom with reef pennants—or via in-mast and in-boom furling mechanisms. Headsails are commonly shortened using a headsail furler.

Executing a reef efficiently requires coordinated crew work and proper yacht rope handling, as releasing the halyard and tensioning the reefing line must be controlled using clutches and winches. Reefing early is essential when encountering sudden squalls or a descending catabatic wind, ensuring the boat remains manageable and fast. Returning to full sail area is known as shaking out a reef.
