Mooring line

A mooring line (also referred to as a mooring warp or berth line) is a heavy-duty, highly elastic rope used to secure a vessel to a quay, pier, mooring buoy, or alongside another boat. According to Wikipedia, a mooring is any permanent structure to which a vessel is secured to forestall its free movement on the water.

Sailors must distinguish mooring lines from other onboard cordage. Unlike running rigging (such as halyards and sheets), which demand low-stretch materials like Dyneema to preserve sail shape, mooring lines require high elasticity. They are typically constructed from three-strand or braided polyamide (nylon) or polyester, capable of 15–25% elongation under stress to absorb shock loads caused by swell and wind gusts. Mooring lines also differ from anchor rodes, tow lines, and heavy commercial hawsers in both construction and handling.

A reliable rule of thumb for sizing is 1 mm of line diameter per 1 m of the boat's length overall (LOA). For a 12-meter (40 ft) sailing yacht, lines with a diameter of 12 to 14 mm and a minimum breaking strength of 2,500 kg are standard. Recommended minimum lengths are 1.5 × LOA for bow and stern lines, and 1.0 to 1.2 × LOA for forward and aft springs.

Properly preparing lines before entering a crowded yacht marina ensures safe berthing. Understanding how to handle these lines is a fundamental part of mastering essential yachting terminology and seamanship.
