In maritime terminology, a **berth** carries distinct homonymous meanings: it refers to a designated mooring location for a vessel or a sleeping accommodation aboard. According to Wikipedia's reference on sleeping accommodations, berths on ships require compact ergonomics. In navigation, the term also denotes maintaining a safe distance from hazards, known as giving a 'wide berth.'

When referencing mooring, a berth is an allotted space along a quay, pier, or pontoon inside a yacht marina. For safe berthing, the berth length should exceed the vessel's Length Overall (LOA) by at least 10–15%, with a minimum under-keel clearance (UKC) of 0.5 to 1.0 meters below the keel at lowest astronomical tide. Beam allowances typically require 0.5 meters of clearance on each side when tied between finger pontoons or piles.

Onboard a yacht, a sleeping berth (or bunk) provides rest space for crew and guests. Standard single berths measure at least 2.0 meters in length by 0.6–0.7 meters in width, while double V-berths in the bow or aft cabins range from 1.2 to 1.6 meters wide. Proper lee cloths or leeboards are essential to prevent occupants from falling out during heel. Understanding yachting terminology helps crew members distinguish between mooring assignments and interior cabin arrangements.
