Shroud
A shroud is a cable or rod forming part of a sailing vessel's standing rigging, providing lateral support to the mast and transferring wind loads to the hull.
A shroud is a critical component of standing rigging that secures the mast against lateral loads. The nautical term must be distinguished from homonyms such as a burial cloth or an engine protective shroud. While stays hold the mast in the fore-and-aft line, shrouds support it from side to side. According to Wikipedia, shrouds attach symmetrically on both the port and starboard sides, terminating at chainplates tied into the hull structure. To improve the support angle on taller rigs, spreaders extend the shrouds outward from the mast.
On modern sailing yachts, shrouds are typically constructed from 1x19 stainless steel wire (diameters usually ranging between 4 mm and 12 mm) or solid rod rigging. Proper tuning requires setting static tension between 15% and 20% of the wire's ultimate breaking load using turnbuckles and a rigging tension gauge. Under-tensioned shrouds allow the mast to pump and flex excessively, while overtightening strains the chainplates and hull structure.
