According to Wikipedia, a winch is a mechanical device used to adjust tension on a rope or wire rope. On modern sailing yachts, sheet and halyard winches function as modified capstans: rather than spooling and storing line on the drum, line passes around the drum under friction while the free tail leaves the device.

Sailboat winches are classified by power ratio, such as 40:1 or 46:2, indicating the mechanical advantage provided by internal gear assemblies when turning the winch handle. A two-speed winch provides lower gearing when turning the handle clockwise and higher gearing counter-clockwise. Most modern cruising yachts utilize self-tailing winches featuring a top feeder arm and spring-loaded jaws designed for line diameters typically ranging from 8 mm to 14 mm. This self-tailing mechanism strips the line automatically, eliminating the need for a dedicated crew member to tail while another cranks.
