Depth sounder

An electronic acoustic instrument that measures water depth underneath a vessel's hull by calculating the travel time of ultrasonic sound pulses reflected from the seabed.

A depth sounder (or echo sounder) is an electronic navigation instrument that measures water depth beneath a vessel by emitting acoustic pulses toward the seabed. Historically, sailors measured depth using a manual lead line cast from small side platforms called chains (as referenced in Wikipedia’s article on nautical chains), but modern sailing relies almost universally on ultrasonic transducers operating at 50 kHz or 200 kHz.

The transducer transmits a sound pulse and calculates depth based on the round-trip time of the echo. Measurements can be displayed in meters (m), feet (ft, where 1 ft = 0.3048 m), or fathoms (1 fathom = 6 ft = 1.8288 m).

In practical seamanship, skippers must distinguish between three distinct reference baselines: Depth Below Transducer (DBT), Depth Below Surface (DBS), and Depth Below Keel (DBK). Setting a zero-offset baseline incorrectly on a yacht with a draft of 2.0 meters can lead to grounding in shallow waters. Integrated into onboard networks via NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000, the depth sounder complements GPS navigation systems and traditional tools like the marine compass to ensure safe coastal passages and anchoring.
