Rudder

An underwater hydrodynamic blade forming part of a vessel's steering system, used to control or alter the yacht's heading by deflecting water flow.

It is essential to distinguish between the helm control (a steering wheel or tiller) and the rudder blade itself—the submerged hydrodynamic profile that generates turning force. The rudder blade connects to the steering mechanism via the rudder stock, a shaft passing through the hull via the stock tube or stuffing box.

When the rudder blade deflects from the centerline, moving water creates asymmetrical pressure across its surfaces, swinging the stern and altering the boat's heading.
