The stern is the rear or aft-most section of a vessel's hull, directly opposing the bow. In nautical terminology, the term refers exclusively to the rear structure of the boat, distinguishing it from the common English adjective "stern" meaning harsh or strict. Architecturally, the stern encompasses the transom, sternpost, counter, and aft deck area where steering gears, rudders, and navigation lights are housed.
